Went to meet a friend who was dropping something off to me on their way out of town, I figured the Land Cruiser museum was as good a place as any to meet. While I was there I also went over into the antiques store for the first time. Man THAT place is nutty. It’ s full of the most random things, from hundreds of what appears to be A frican statues to old Yamaha’s and literally every chair ever.

Wandering this place I could see why people enjoy antiquing. The stories in this place were mind boggling. Who has a stuffed African l ion? Also, people use to really like to paint topless women I guess.

Also I went over to my happy place and chatted with the good folks about the new arrivals, A trekka HZJ75 troo py that has driven a cross Africa, South American and Europe as well as a 91 FJ80. Seen in the background. They also had a brand new map made up for them of the state. IT. WAS. AWESOME! I want it, if it wasn’t bigger than my living room. you can see that little grey square in the upper right of the map? Its 3d printed and is about 8x5 and the map is made up of hundreds of those. The details is amazing and super tactile. I was chatting with the museum owner about all the cool places we each want to explore on the map. I love that this part of the map alone could take me my whole life to explore (it’ s about 1000 square miles)

and it’ s about this much of the map.

Good times.

Very cool. I’d love to visit that museum sometime.

As for the multitude of topless lady paintings, I always assumed that was the main reason to get into art. You can ask a model to get naked without being pervy.

Must be because this place was FULL of small to huge paintings of topless women.  I kinda feel like they are like that Steam powered jeep for sale on the main page a few days ago.  I kinda get the art and creating part...but who the heck BUYS them?

RE: that map - this is how I always feel when I travel or explore, really just about anywhere. When you’re in a place, outdoors, it feels huge; endless. Our recent trip to Iceland felt like this. We explored a LOT in a few days, but looking at a map of the whole country, it’s like we explored the dot of a single “i” in this paragraph. I love this feeling and hope to be able to pass it on to my kids. I also love looking at maps like that (or any good map) for that same reason.

We put a 3d map up on the wall in the entrance to our building. It covers our whole area with relief using the DEM. Size is 9x12ft and it cost almost $4K..

Looks good though.

I would guess this one is 10 x 20 ish.  Can’t begin to guess at the cost.

Looks sharp with those river features, lots of little detailed tiles is the key.

Ours was two pieces limited by the 6ft size of the 3d printer tray.. it weighed a ton and needed a lift to get it in and up on the wall. Plus because it’s out in the public it has a 3m graffiti proof covering that makes it shiny.

I had a similar reaction when I read the Silmarillion. I had spent many days of my life on Lord of the Rings, and that rich story was basically one paragraph out of this enormous history that Tolkien had created.

It helped me appreciate just how big the real world is, and how much is left out of history books.

Got me. You may have stumbled upon the collection of a discerning collector

Interesting... and yet that’s a world I haven’t delved into even a little bit myself. It’s on my list to start reading to my kids soon.

One of the hobby-ish things I’d like to get into would be a dig to paper project;

That lore gets deep.  A little too deep for me.

I don’t have near enough patience to wade through that anymore. The Internet and smartphones have destroyed my attention span.
